About Us

The National Council of Women of Great Britain is an independent, non-party political organisation established in 1895 and is the oldest women's organisation in the United Kingdom. It was affiliated to the International Council of Women in 1897 and we still work nationally and internationally on issues of concern to women. In 2000 NCW was given special consultative status at the United Nations, which enables us to send representatives to sessions such as the Commission on the Status of Women, held in New York every March.

In 1969 NCW were founder members of the Women's National Commission, which had two Chairmen, one appointed by the government and the other was Dame Guinevere Tilney, President of NCW 1968-1970. We continue to be partners of the WNC and are members of the Six-O Group of top women's organisations. Internationally we work with the International Council of Women, the European Network of ICW, and the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

Our Aims

Our aims are to interest women in local, regional and national affairs and ensure their participation in all areas of development and decision-making. We represent their views and concerns to government at the highest possible level and are dedicated to removing discrimination in all areas of society.

We research, consult, debate, hold seminars, monitor new legislation and respond to government consultations on a wide range of issues.

We work with schools, colleges and universities through our Young Women's link, which includes intergenerational seminars with workshops that help formulate NCW resolutions and policy.

We have over forty women's organisations affiliated to us; they are involved in our activities and have a vote at our conference.
