This year it will kick off a year-long campaign on maternal and newborn health ““ an issue which underpins lifelong health, stronger communities, and our collective future. Alongside advocating for actions that improve survival, WHO and partners will work with mothers and health-care professionals to share useful information about healthy pregnancies, births, and postnatal health.

Nearly all maternal deaths are preventable and yet around the world, millions of women still lack access to lifesaving care before, during and after birth.

⚠️ 9 in 10 maternal deaths happen in the poorest countries

⚠️ 3 in 5 maternal deaths happen in countries affected by conflict or fragility

Access to healthcare is a human right that must always be assured.

The National Council of Women’s delegation to the UN Commission on the Status of Women in March was keen to raise the issue of pregnancy and birth, including our concern about child marriage. The importance of education in protecting the health of women and girls is covered in our resolution –https://ncwgb.org/resolutions/reaffirmation-of-girls-education-and-poverty-2023/
