The Conference of INGOs (CINGO) of the Council of Europe takes note of the announced EU initiative to establish a European anti-poverty strategy.

Poverty eradication is at the heart of the commitments of many of its members. Therefore, having as reference their work at the Council of Europe, CINGO wants to draw attention to the following principles and observations, which should guide the preparation by the European Commission of the EU anti-poverty strategy:

1. Focus on addressing root causes of, and on preventing poverty with a Human Rights based approach.

2. Accede to the Revised European Social Charter

3. Collaboration with people experiencing poverty and organisations representing their interests

4. Adequate funding

In March we held an online debate on Women and Poverty featuring The Scottish Women’s Convention, the Women’s Budget Group and Care International.

Their presentations were both educational and disheartening in equal measure. Poverty underlines so many of the disadvantages faced by women, creating a poverty trap that many will not escape.
