The National Council of Women Great Britain and Carrie de Silva hosted the event entitled Women in Street Names on Thursday 5 December, 1. They discussed their project to highlight women in street names in the UK.
Carrie is a Visiting Professor of Real Estate Practice Law at Harper Adams University and an Honorary Professor at the Royal Agricultural University. She also delivers training to residential valuers and offers CPD on various aspects of law, and on mentoring women to senior career progression, to the land and property sector. In her spare time Carrie is writing on women in street names ““ the stories of women honoured in street names throughout the UK, with a consideration of the potential wider impact of limited female commemoration in public places.
The talk highlighted streets named after women, recognising how few there are in comparison to streets named after and commemorating men. Outputs:
- a book of mini biographies of women named
- a paper to consider the promulgation of political and social culturalization, conscious and unconscious, through the limited public representation of women and its impact on individuals’ aim for higher office.
